Quick answer
Hang the bottom of a dining table chandelier 76 to 91 cm (30 to 36 inches) above the tabletop when the ceiling is about 2.4 m (8 ft). For every extra 30 cm of ceiling height, add about 7.5 cm: roughly 84 to 99 cm at 2.7 m and 91 to 107 cm at 3.0 m. Over a standard 76 cm table, the bottom of the fitting then sits about 152 to 167 cm from the floor on a 2.4 m ceiling.
Size the fitting to the table, not the room: about half to two-thirds of the table's width, so a 100 cm light suits a table about 150 to 200 cm long. The eight dining table lights below cost between ₦300,000 and ₦750,000, against a median of ₦360,000 across our 158 active chandeliers (19 October 2026).

How we wrote this
LAGE Lightings (also known as Lights Architect) sells every light in this guide, so we have an interest and you should know it. The height and size rules come from published design guides, which we link beside each figure: Golden Lighting (a guide by Rick Kovac, dated 28 July 2026), Raymour & Flanigan, Block Renovation (by Cheyenne Howard, dated 23 August 2026), Mullan Lighting (an older guide, dated 2016) and Planner 5D for standard table heights. Most are written in inches for US homes, so the centimetre figures are our own conversions, rounded to the nearest centimetre.
The guides agree on 30 to 36 inches above the table for an 8 ft ceiling. They are less consistent on what to add for taller ceilings: the 2026 guides add about 3 inches (7.6 cm) per extra foot, while the 2016 Mullan guide adds only about 2 cm per foot. We use the 3 inch rule. We could not find a verified Nigerian standard for dining table lighting height, a Nigerian standard for residential ceiling height, or a trusted installation labour rate, so we quote none of them. We have not tested these fittings in your home, and where a listing does not state a size, wattage or drop, we say so and suggest you ask.
The height chart, in centimetres
Use this chart to find the gap between the tabletop and the bottom of the fitting. It converts the 30 to 36 inch rule for an 8 ft ceiling and adds 3 inches (7.6 cm) for each extra foot, as Block Renovation, Golden Lighting and Raymour & Flanigan describe. The right-hand column adds a 76 cm table, the 30 inch height that Planner 5D gives as the most common.
| Ceiling height | Bottom of fitting above the tabletop | Bottom of fitting from the floor (76 cm table) |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 m (8 ft) | 76 to 91 cm | 152 to 167 cm |
| 2.7 m (9 ft) | 84 to 99 cm | 160 to 175 cm |
| 3.0 m (10 ft) | 91 to 107 cm | 167 to 183 cm |
| 3.3 m (11 ft) | 99 to 114 cm | 175 to 190 cm |
| 3.7 m (12 ft) | 107 to 122 cm | 183 to 198 cm |
Source: inch ranges from the guides linked above, converted by us and rounded. Ceiling heights are rounded to the nearest 10 cm, so a 3.0 m ceiling is slightly under 10 ft. Raymour & Flanigan says the ceiling adjustment is optional and that staying at 76 cm is acceptable on a taller ceiling, so treat the upper end as a guide. On a 72 cm table, take 4 cm off the right-hand column.
Our Chandelier & Pendant Light Sizing Guide for Nigerian Homes uses the same starting range and now matches this chart. In that guide we describe about 2.7 m as a common bungalow ceiling and 3.0 to 3.3 m as a common standard duplex floor, which is our own observation from client homes and not a published standard. Measure yours from the finished floor to the finished ceiling.
Why it is a range, and how to test it
The guides give a range because the right height depends on the people and the fitting. Four things move it up or down:
- Sightlines. Golden Lighting says the bottom of the fitting should stay above the seated eye line across the table. If it blocks conversation it is too low, and if it disappears into the ceiling line it is too high. High chair backs raise the eye line, so you may need to go higher.
- Tall centrepieces. Raymour & Flanigan warns that hanging too low can limit tall table decor, and that hanging too high can light the table poorly.
- The style of the fitting. Lighting New York says ornate or tiered fittings may need a little more headroom, while modern fittings can hang slightly higher to show their lines, and traditional crystal can sit a little lower.
- Canopy and shade depth. Golden Lighting points out that the canopy and the body of the fitting use up part of the drop, so measure to the bottom of the finished fitting and not to the chain.
To test it, cut a piece of cardboard to the width of the fitting and tape it up at your chosen height, or hang a balloon, then sit at the table. Golden Lighting suggests marking two or three heights with painter's tape and checking each while seated, and Lighting New York suggests a balloon. Do this before the electrician sets the hook.
Work out your chain or rod length
The chart gives the gap above the table. To order the right chain or rod, Block Renovation suggests subtracting the table height, the clearance you want and the height of the fitting body from the ceiling height. In centimetres:
Chain or rod length = ceiling height minus table height minus gap above the table minus height of the fitting body.
Worked example 1, using the Baxter Chandelier, which is listed at 28 cm high. On a 3.0 m ceiling with a 76 cm table and a 91 cm gap (the low end of the 10 ft row): 300 minus 76 minus 91 minus 28 = 105 cm of chain or rod.
Worked example 2, with the same fitting on a 2.4 m ceiling and a 76 cm gap: 240 minus 76 minus 76 minus 28 = 60 cm.
These are our calculations from the guide's method and the listed height, not figures from the product page. Most of the lights below do not state a drop, so ask us for the maximum drop, the canopy depth and whether the chain can be shortened before you order. If the drop cannot be shortened to suit your ceiling, the fitting is the wrong one.
Size the fitting to the table
Height is only half the job. Golden Lighting, Raymour & Flanigan and Block Renovation all point to a fitting about half to two-thirds of the table's width. Block Renovation also leaves at least 15 cm (6 inches) of bare tabletop on every side of a round or square table, and above about 75% of the table's width the fitting starts to crowd the seats. Mullan Lighting gives a simpler rule: make the fitting 30 cm narrower than the table's narrowest width. Raymour & Flanigan adds that it should be centred on the table and not extend past its edges.
For a round table, use the diameter:
| Round table across | Suggested fitting diameter (50% to 67%) |
|---|---|
| 1 m | about 50 to 67 cm |
| 1.2 m | about 60 to 80 cm |
| 1.5 m | about 75 to 100 cm |
| 1.8 m | about 90 to 121 cm |
For a rectangular table, Golden Lighting says to size to the long axis. Applying the same half to two-thirds range to the table's length is our adaptation for long, linear fittings, and the result is a guide, not a rule:
| Table length | Suggested fitting length (50% to 67%) |
|---|---|
| 1.4 m | about 70 to 93 cm |
| 1.6 m | about 80 to 107 cm |
| 1.8 m | about 90 to 120 cm |
| 2 m | about 100 to 133 cm |
| 2.4 m | about 120 to 160 cm |
Our own calculation from the half to two-thirds rule. Block Renovation says open-frame fittings can run 20 to 30% larger than the formula and dense, solid ones should be a little smaller. Use our chandelier size calculator or the Chandelier & Pendant Light Sizing Guide for Nigerian Homes for more cases.
Eight dining table lights from our range
These are editorial picks from our active chandelier collection, listed from the lowest price to the highest. They are not a ranking by sales, and we do not publish sales figures. We chose fittings whose listings state a size and mention dining, so you can match them to your table with the tables above. All prices are the lowest variant price on the listing, and "not stated" means the listing does not give the figure, so ask us.
| No. | Light | Price | Stated size | Material and finish as listed | Suits | Check before you buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Long Glass Island Light | ₦300,000 | 100 cm | Black, minimalist design | Tables about 150 to 200 cm long | Material, wattage and drop are not stated, so ask for all three. The listing also suggests it for a kitchen island. |
| 2 | Linear Chandelier | ₦330,000 | 100 cm | Black, minimalist design | Tables about 150 to 200 cm long | Material, wattage and drop are not stated, so ask for all three. |
| 3 | Horizontal Crystals Chandelier | ₦380,000 | 100 cm | Stainless steel and crystals, gold or silver; bulbs included | Tables about 150 to 200 cm long | Wattage depends on the bulbs supplied. Ask for the drop and the weight. |
| 4 | Halo Long Chandelier | ₦420,000 | 1,000 mm (100 cm) | Crystal glass on a steel frame, chrome silver; 50W | Round tables about 150 to 200 cm across | The name says long but the description says a floating orb, so ask us to confirm the shape, the drop and the weight before you order. |
| 5 | Cloud Glass Chandelier, Long | ₦500,000 | 1,200 mm (120 cm) | Glass; LED bulbs | Tables about 180 to 240 cm long | Glass is heavy and fragile, so ask for the weight, the packaging and the wattage. |
| 6 | Murano Long Chandelier | ₦600,000 | 120 cm | Venetian glasswork | Tables about 180 to 240 cm long | Ask in writing what the glass and frame are made of, and for the weight, drop and wattage. |
| 7 | Baxter Chandelier | ₦680,000 | 100 cm long, 28 cm high | Metal and acrylic, golden finish; integrated LED in warm white, white and natural light | Tables about 150 to 200 cm long | Wattage is not stated. At 28 cm tall it is the slimmest on this list, which helps when the ceiling is low. |
| 8 | Recti Glass Plate Light | ₦750,000 | 150 cm | Alloy | Tables about 225 to 240 cm long; for longer tables consider two fittings | Wattage and drop are not stated, so ask for both. |

Islands, low ceilings and long tables
Kitchen islands and bar tables
Block Renovation suggests about 86 to 102 cm (34 to 40 inches) above a counter-height or bar-height surface, which Planner 5D gives as about 86 to 91 cm and 102 to 107 cm tall. Islands usually take a row of identical pendants, and our pendant and drop lights include options sized for them.
Low ceilings
On a 2.4 m ceiling over a 76 cm table, a 76 cm gap leaves about 88 cm for the fitting and its drop together, so choose a slim or flush piece. Raymour & Flanigan treats 76 cm as the lowest sensible gap, while Mullan Lighting suggests trimming a few centimetres in a low room so people do not bump their heads when they stand. The two sources differ, so test with tape. A flush option from our ceiling lights may suit a very low ceiling better than any hanging chandelier.
Tall and sloped ceilings
Golden Lighting says that in a very tall room, proportion should take priority over the formula, so the fitting may need to be larger as well as higher. On a sloped or vaulted ceiling, measure straight down, not along the slope.
Long tables
Block Renovation suggests two fittings once a table passes about 2.4 m, each about one-third of the table's width and centred over each half. Golden Lighting also says two pendants suit long tables and a row of three or more suits a table that needs wider coverage.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hanging it to the room, not the table. Centre it on the table, even if the table is off-centre in the room.
- Measuring to the chain. Measure to the bottom of the finished fitting, after the canopy and body are counted.
- Copying one height for every ceiling. The 76 to 91 cm range is for about 2.4 m. Add height as the ceiling rises.
- Skipping the seated test. Sit at the table with a cardboard shape or balloon at the chosen height before the hook goes in.
- Choosing too wide a fitting. Keep it at about half to two-thirds of the table, with bare tabletop visible on every side.
- Forgetting the drop. Most listings do not state it. Ask for the maximum drop and whether the chain can be shortened.
- Ignoring weight. Glass, crystal and metal are heavy, so confirm the ceiling and hook before you order.
- Assuming "crystal" or "glass" is what you think. Ask for the material in writing.
- Forgetting delivery and installation. Both are extra, so get them quoted. See delivery options and costs.

Questions buyers ask
How high should a chandelier hang above a dining table?
Hang the bottom of the chandelier 76 to 91 cm (30 to 36 inches) above the tabletop when the ceiling is about 2.4 m (8 ft), a range given by Golden Lighting, Raymour & Flanigan and Block Renovation. For taller ceilings, add about 7.5 cm for every extra 30 cm, which gives roughly 84 to 99 cm at 2.7 m and 91 to 107 cm at 3.0 m. Tape a cardboard shape to the ceiling or hold a balloon at the chosen height and sit at the table before the electrician cuts the chain.
How far should a dining room chandelier be from the floor?
Over a standard 76 cm (30 inch) table, the bottom of the fitting ends up about 152 to 167 cm from the floor when the ceiling is 2.4 m, and about 183 to 198 cm when the ceiling is 3.7 m. Block Renovation gives 60 to 66 inches for 8 ft ceilings and 72 to 78 inches for 12 ft ceilings, which are the same figures in centimetres. Planner 5D gives standard dining tables as 71 to 76 cm tall, so a lower table lowers the floor figure by the same amount. The gap above the tabletop matters more, because nobody walks beneath a dining fitting.
How high should a chandelier hang over a dining table with a 2.7 m ceiling?
About 84 to 99 cm above the tabletop, which is the 9 ft row of the guides converted to centimetres. Over a 76 cm table that puts the bottom of the fitting about 160 to 175 cm from the floor. In our Chandelier & Pendant Light Sizing Guide for Nigerian Homes we describe about 2.7 m as a common bungalow ceiling height, which is our own observation and not a published standard. Measure your own ceiling.
How big should a chandelier over a dining table be?
The guides give about half to two-thirds of the table's width. Block Renovation also leaves at least 15 cm (6 inches) of bare tabletop on every side of a round or square table, and Golden Lighting says to size a rectangular table's fitting to its long axis. Applying that to a long fitting, a 100 cm light suits a table about 150 to 200 cm long and a 120 cm light suits one about 180 to 240 cm long. Our chandelier size calculator will do the arithmetic.
Is 76 cm (30 inches) too low for a dining table chandelier?
It is the minimum most guides give. Raymour & Flanigan treats 30 inches as the lowest sensible height and says staying there is acceptable even on a taller ceiling. Go higher if your guests are tall, your chairs have high backs, you use tall centrepieces, or the fitting is wide or tiered. Golden Lighting notes that tall chair backs raise the seated eye line, and the bottom of the fitting should stay above it.
Should the chandelier be centred over the table or the room?
Over the table. Raymour & Flanigan advises centring it on the table even when the table is not centred in the room, and keeping the fitting about 90 to 120 cm (3 to 4 feet) from the nearest wall. It should also not extend past the table's edges, so standing guests do not hit it.
How many chandeliers does a long dining table need?
Block Renovation suggests two fittings once a table passes about 2.4 m (8 ft), each about one-third of the table's width and centred over each half. Golden Lighting also notes that two pendants suit long tables. A single long fitting such as the Recti Glass Plate Light (150 cm) can serve a table up to about 2.4 m.
How high should a light hang over a kitchen island or bar table?
Block Renovation suggests about 86 to 102 cm (34 to 40 inches) above a counter-height or bar-height surface. Planner 5D gives counter height as 86 to 91 cm and bar height as 102 to 107 cm. Pendants over an island are usually a row of three or more, so see our comparison of chandelier vs pendant light for a Nigerian dining room.
What can I hang over a dining table if the ceiling is low?
On a 2.4 m ceiling over a 76 cm table, a 76 cm clearance leaves about 88 cm for the fitting and its drop together. Choose a slim or flush fitting: the Baxter Chandelier is listed at 28 cm high, which leaves about 60 cm for a chain or rod. The sources differ on how low you can go: Raymour & Flanigan treats 76 cm as the minimum, while Mullan Lighting suggests trimming a few centimetres in a low room so people do not bump their heads when they stand. Test with tape before you decide.
How much does a dining table chandelier cost in Nigeria?
Across the 158 active chandeliers at LAGE Lightings on 19 October 2026, the median price was ₦360,000, the middle half sat between ₦280,000 and ₦550,000, and the range ran from ₦65,000 to ₦1,500,000. The eight dining-table lights in this guide run from ₦300,000 to ₦750,000. Prices are for the fitting only; installation, wiring and delivery are separate, and we could not find a reliable published Nigerian rate for installation labour, so we do not quote one. See our chandelier price guide and the Nigeria Lighting Price Index.
